Psychrometrics on the PE Mechanical exam
If there's one topic that decides the HVAC & Refrigeration exam, it's psychrometrics. It's roughly a quarter of the questions, it underpins every load and air-handling problem, and it shows up on the Thermal & Fluid Systems exam too. The good news: it's a closed, learnable skill — and the psychrometric chart is the tool that makes most of it fast.
What you actually need to own
- The state properties and how they relate: dry-bulb and wet-bulb temperature, dew point, humidity ratio, relative humidity, enthalpy, and specific volume. Any two fix the state; the chart gives you the rest.
- The standard air-side processes as moves on the chart: sensible heating and cooling, humidi- fication and dehumidification, and cooling-with-dehumidification (the real cooling-coil process).
- Sensible vs. latent vs. total heat — and the "standard air" shortcut factors that convert airflow and a temperature or humidity difference into a sensible, latent, or total load.
- Mixing two airstreams — the mixed state lands on the line between the two, weighted by mass flow (the lever rule).
Where people lose points
- Reading the chart too slowly. Under a six-minute-per-question clock, you can't afford to reconstruct the chart logic each time. It has to be automatic.
- Sensible vs. latent confusion — using a sensible-heat relationship on a process that's moving moisture, or vice versa.
- Non-sea-level air. The standard factors assume standard air; at elevation (or low temperature) the air density changes and the shortcuts need correcting. The exam specifically tests this.
- Mixing problems — forgetting to weight by mass flow, or mixing on the wrong properties.
How to study it
Drill the chart until the processes are muscle memory: pick a start state, run each standard process, and predict the end state before you plot it. Then do mixed sensible-plus-latent load problems timed, with only the references you'll have on exam day.
