How hard is the PE Mechanical exam?

Why it's hard (the real reasons)
The difficulty isn't exotic math — it's the conditions:
- It's closed book under a clock. Your only reference is the on-screen NCEES Handbook, at ~6 minutes per question. Knowing where things live in it is its own skill, and hunting for them burns the time you don't have. (How to use the Handbook.)
- It's broad. Each depth spans many areas; thin spots anywhere get found.
- The problems run harder than the popular practice books. Candidates consistently report the real exam's problems are tougher and more varied than the samples they trained on.
- Pacing is part of the test. Eight hours sounds like plenty until you're searching the Handbook — pacing is a top failure mode.
- Engineering judgment, not just plug-and-chug. Many items reward understanding what a component actually does, not a single equation.
Which depth is hardest?
By the numbers, Machine Design & Materials is the hardest — the lowest pass rates on both first attempts and retakes, and the broadest (six areas, two unit systems, a compounding mechanics-of-materials spine). Thermal & Fluid Systems has the highest first-time pass rate, and HVAC & Refrigeration sits in between. But "hardest" is partly personal — the right depth is the one that matches your daily work, where your fundamentals are strongest.
Is the PE harder than the FE?
Yes, in a specific way. The FE is broad-but-shallow fundamentals, taken near graduation. The PE Mechanical is discipline-specific and deeper, taken years later when some of the material has gone rusty — and it demands exam-real problem fluency under a closed-book clock. Most candidates spend more focused hours on the PE than they did on the FE.

The people who pass do the same things, and the people who fail skip them:
- Diagnose first, then drill your weak, heavy areas — don't study everything evenly.
