Is your PE study material up to date?

Prep materials circulate: used books change hands after every pass, course recordings outlive their spec cycles, and a colleague's binder is free. There's nothing wrong with studying from older material — engineering doesn't expire — but the exam is versioned, and knowing which parts of an older resource still serve you is a ten-minute check that prevents a bad surprise.

Three version numbers govern your exam. The exam specification (the blueprint of areas and question counts — revised most recently effective October 2025 for PE Mechanical); the Reference Handbook version (the searchable PDF you'll actually have on screen — the current version is stated through your NCEES account); and the practice-exam edition (NCEES issues new editions to track spec changes). Your materials were built against some vintage of all three.

What ages fine: the physics, the problem-solving reps, the fundamentals teaching. A five-year-old fluids problem still trains fluids. If an older bank or course teaches you to set up and solve problems, that value survives any spec revision.

What ages badly: three specific things. Topic coverage — a spec revision adds, drops, and re-weights areas, so an old course's syllabus can quietly over-train removed material and skip newer emphases. Handbook references — solutions citing section numbers from an older Handbook version send you hunting in the wrong places, which is worse than no reference at all. Practice-exam scores — an old edition sampled an old blueprint; treat its score as a rep, not a reading.

The ten-minute check for any material: find its publication date and stated spec/Handbook version; put its table of contents next to the current specification for your exam and mark what's missing or extra; spot-check a few solution references against the current Handbook. Then use it for what it's still good for — reps — and get your measurement from current-spec sources.
