PE Mechanical exam pass rates — and what they actually tell you

Most first-timers pass the PE Mechanical exam — but a real share don't, and the data is worth reading closely before you plan your prep. The headline: the majority of first-time takers pass, the exam fails repeat takers far more often than first-timers, and the gap between those two groups is mostly about method, not ability. Here's the current data, by depth, straight from NCEES — and what it should change about how you prepare.

Three things to take from this:

  • Most first-timers pass — roughly two-thirds to seven-in-ten, depending on depth. If you prepare well, the odds are with you.
  • It's not a formality, either — roughly a quarter to a third of first-timers don't pass. This is a real exam that rewards real preparation.
  • Repeat takers pass at 35–47%below a coin flip in two of the three depths. That gap is the most important number on this page, and the next section is why.

Why repeat takers do worse, not better

It's counterintuitive — you'd expect a second attempt, with the material fresh and the format no longer a surprise, to be easier. The reason it usually isn't: most people repeat the same preparation that didn't work the first time. More lectures, more re-reading, the same scattered problem practice. The score barely moves.

What actually moves it is changing the method — diagnosing exactly where the points were lost, then drilling those specific areas under exam-like conditions, instead of restarting at chapter one. Which depth is "hardest"?

By the numbers, Machine Design & Materials is the toughest on both counts — lowest first-time pass and lowest repeat pass — which tracks with its breadth (it's the widest-ranging depth). Thermal & Fluid Systems posts the highest first-time pass, with HVAC & Refrigeration close behind. But don't pick your depth by its pass rate: you should sit the depth that matches your work and fundamentals (which depth should you take?), because that's where your existing knowledge does the most work. What "passing" actually means

NCEES scores the PE Mechanical exam against a scaled cut score set by subject-matter experts through a standard-setting process — not a curve against the other people who tested that day. There's no published passing score — no fixed percentage like "you need 70%" — and you're not competing against your cohort: everyone who meets the competency standard passes. The first-time pass rate isn't luck — it's the product of a method. The candidates who pass:

  • diagnose their weak areas first and study those, instead of everything evenly;
  • make exam-real problems the main event, returning to theory only on a miss;
