Which PE Mechanical depth should you take?

Quick answer

PE Mechanical is three separate depth exams — you sit one to get licensed. Pick the depth that matches your day-to-day work and your strongest fundamentals — not the one with the best pass rate.

If your work spans two, pick where your fundamentals are deepest — that's where you'll study least and score most. The depth you pass does not narrow your license (in most states): you earn the same PE.

The real rule: match your work, not the pass rate

The single best predictor of passing is how much of the exam you already do for a living. A depth that maps to your daily work means most of the material is familiar, your fundamentals are warm, and you study less to reach ready. So choose in this order:

  1. What you do at work — the depth whose topics you touch most.
  2. Where your fundamentals are strongest — if two depths fit, pick the one whose core (psychrometrics, mechanics of materials, or thermo/fluids) you know cold.
  3. Only then glance at the pass rate — and don't let a few points pull you into material you don't use.

Candidates who've been through it are unusually unanimous here: those who chose the depth matching their daily work consistently describe the exam's conceptual and experience-flavored questions as feeling "free," while those who picked against their background paid for it in extra study hours. Pass-rate differences between depths are small compared to the fit advantage — when in doubt, pick the exam whose problems you already live with at work.

"But which one is easiest?"

By the numbers, Thermal & Fluid Systems has the highest first-time pass rate and Machine Design & Materials the lowest (it's the broadest). But "easiest" is the wrong lens: the easiest depth for you is the one that matches your work. Chasing a 3–4 point pass-rate gap into a depth you don't practice trades a small statistical edge for a large knowledge gap — a bad deal. (How hard each one is.)

The "match your work" rule gets easier with specifics. If your title or industry is on a depth's list, that's a strong signal it's your exam.

HVAC & Refrigeration

  • Roles: HVAC design engineer · mechanical (building systems) engineer · MEP engineer · refrigeration engineer · energy / sustainability engineer · building controls & commissioning engineer · plumbing & piping engineer (buildings) · facilities / plant engineer.
  • Industries: MEP / AE consulting, commercial & institutional building design, HVAC & refrigeration equipment manufacturers, data centers, healthcare & labs, energy / ESCO, food cold-chain.

Machine Design & Materials

  • Roles: machine design engineer · mechanical design / product engineer · stress / mechanical-analysis engineer · materials engineer · manufacturing / process engineer · reliability engineer · components engineer (gears, bearings, fasteners) · tooling & fixture engineer.
  • Industries: industrial machinery & equipment OEMs, automotive, aerospace & defense, robotics & automation, medical devices, consumer products, heavy equipment, manufacturing.

Thermal & Fluid Systems

  • Roles: thermal engineer · fluid systems engineer · power / energy engineer · process engineer (mechanical) · piping & systems engineer (plants) · turbomachinery / rotating-equipment engineer · thermal-analysis / CFD engineer.
  • Industries: power generation & utilities, oil & gas / petrochemical, process & chemical plants, energy & renewables, marine & propulsion, aerospace propulsion, data-center thermal.

The mechanical engineering job market

For scale: there are about 293,100 mechanical engineers in the U.S., with a median wage of $102,320 (BLS, 2024), and employment is projected to grow 9% from 2024 to 2034 — "much faster than average" — with roughly 18,100 openings a year. A PE license adds a premium on top of that base. (The salary detail.)

One honest caveat on per-depth numbers: BLS counts "mechanical engineers" as a single occupation — it doesn't split them into HVAC, machine-design, or thermal/fluid specialties, so there's no clean "X HVAC PEs vs. Y machine-design PEs" figure (anyone quoting one is guessing). The best real signal for how common each depth is comes from exam-taker volume: HVAC & Refrigeration is the largest PE Mechanical depth by candidate volume, and Thermal & Fluid Systems is the fastest-growing (NCEES).

Edge cases

  • My work spans two depths. Pick the one whose fundamentals you know best — you'll study less and the exam will feel more familiar. Don't pick by which sounds more impressive.
  • I've been out of the field / my work is general. Fundamentals matter most here — choose the depth whose core you can rebuild fastest, and lean on a diagnostic to confirm where you actually stand.
  • Does my depth limit what I can stamp? In most states, no — you earn a general PE (Mechanical) license regardless of which depth you sat; the depth is which exam you took, not a restriction on practice. (You're always ethically bound to work within your competence.) Confirm specifics with your state board.

You sit one — and if you don't pass, you retake the same

You only take one depth per attempt. If you don't pass, retake the same depth — switching throws away the knowledge you built and rarely helps. (A retake plan that works.)
