PE Mechanical exam-day pacing

Plenty of engineers fail this exam not because they didn't know the material, but because they ran out of time. On a closed-book exam where the only reference is a long on-screen Handbook, the clock is an opponent — and most people don't practice against it until it's too late. Pacing is a trained skill, and this is how to train and execute it.

The math

80 questions, about 8 hours of working time — roughly six minutes per question on average. That sounds comfortable until you hit a multi-step psychrometrics or heat-exchanger problem and realize you've spent fifteen minutes on one item. A few of those and you're behind for the rest of the day. The fix isn't going faster on hard problems — it's not letting hard problems steal time from easy points.

The triage strategy

You don't have to answer in order, and you shouldn't grind through in order either. Work in two passes:

  1. First pass — bank the fast points. Go through and answer everything you can do quickly. Most people can clear a large share of the exam this way in well under half the time.
  2. Flag the time-sinks. Anything that needs real setup or a Handbook hunt — mark it and move on. Never let one problem eat ten minutes while five easy points sit unanswered later in the exam.
  3. Second pass — the flagged ones. Now you know how much time you have, and you can spend it deliberately on the hard problems, guessing the ones you can't crack.

A rough rhythm to check yourself against

Adapt to your own speed, but a workable set of checkpoints:

By the end of… You want to have…
~2 hours a first pass through roughly the first half, fast points banked
~4 hours the first pass complete on all 80; every time-sink flagged
~6–7 hours the flagged/hard problems worked
last ~30 min every blank filled (guess — no penalty), a quick scan for slips

If you hit the ~4-hour mark and you're not through a first pass, that's your signal to start guessing the hardest items and protect the points you can still get.

Where the hidden time goes

  • Hunting the Handbook. Closed-book means every equation, chart, and property table is a lookup. If you don't already know roughly where things live, every problem costs search time. (Build the navigation skill.)
  • Re-deriving what should be automatic. If the psychrometric processes or the standard air/water factors aren't second nature, you'll rebuild them under pressure every time. Drill them until they aren't a thinking task.
  • Fiddling with alternative item types. Drag-and-drop and point-and-click items can eat time if they're unfamiliar — practice them before exam day, not on it.
  • The break. The nine-hour appointment includes time for a scheduled break — plan whether and when you'll take it, and remember re-entry to the test center costs a few minutes.

The last 30 minutes

No question goes unanswered. There's no penalty for a wrong answer, so before time expires, fill every blank with your best guess — even on items you never reached. A blank is a guaranteed zero; a guess isn't.

Protect your earlier self's answers. The most consistent late-exam warning from candidates who've been through it: somewhere in the final hours, fatigue arrives and second-guessing begins. Changing answers you were confident about when you were fresher is how solid exams erode in the last ninety minutes. Unless you've found a concrete error — a misread, a unit slip — the engineer who answered three hours ago was sharper than the one reviewing now. Trust them, and spend the closing minutes on flagged problems instead. If you're prone to it, a consistent guessing letter for true unknowns also removes one more late-day decision.

Rehearse it, don't wing it

Pacing is a trained skill, not a test-day intention. Do your practice timed, with only the references you'll have on exam day. Full-length, timed mock exams are the only way to find out whether your pace holds up for a full day — and to fix it while it still matters.
