How to register for the PE Mechanical exam

The PE Mechanical exam is computer-based and offered year-round, so registration is less about hitting a window and more about a sequence: create your NCEES account, register and pay, get your board's approval, then schedule a seat at a Pearson VUE center. The registration process, step by step

1. Create a MyNCEES account at ncees.org (available 24/7). This is your hub for registration, scheduling, results, and your records.
2. Register for the PE Mechanical exam and choose your depth (HVAC & Refrigeration, Machine Design & Materials, or Thermal & Fluid Systems) — you sit one.
3. Pay the NCEES exam fee (see below).
4. Get board approval. Most state boards must approve your eligibility before you can schedule. Some states have decoupled experience from sitting (you can test before finishing your years) — confirm your state's requirements.
5. Receive your authorization email, then log back into MyNCEES and choose "SCHEDULE."
6. Book your seat at Pearson VUE — pick a center, date, and time. You can reserve up to a year in advance. Once approved, you generally have 12 months to take the exam.
7. Get your confirmation (date, time, location) — you'll need it on exam day.

Exam dates & availability

• Year-round. Because it's CBT, there's no single national exam day — you schedule when a seat is available at your center.
• Book early for your preferred date/location; popular centers fill, especially around busy periods.

Rescheduling, canceling, and refunds

• Reschedule: generally possible through Pearson VUE up to a cutoff before your appointment, sometimes with a fee. Closer to the date, rescheduling may not be allowed.
• Cancel before the NCEES registration deadline: typically refundable minus a ~$50 administrative fee.
• After the registration deadline: registrations generally can't be canceled and fees aren't refunded.
• Miss your appointment (no-show) without proper rescheduling: you typically forfeit the fee.
