Cp vs Cv on the PE exam: which one, when, and why

The names are the trap. "Constant-pressure" and "constant-volume" specific heats sound like instructions — use Cp when pressure is constant, Cv when volume is — and that reading fails exactly when the exam wants it to: in compression and flow problems where neither is constant.

The rule that actually works (ideal gases): Cp and Cv are property relations, not process labels. For an ideal gas, enthalpy change is Δh = Cp·ΔT and internal-energy change is Δu = Cv·ΔTfor any process, constant-anything or not (the Handbook states both in its ideal-gas coverage, §4.2). So the real question is never "what's held constant?" It's "does this problem need enthalpy or internal energy?"

Which the problem needs follows from the system: steady-flow devices — compressors, turbines, nozzles, heat exchangers — are analyzed with enthalpy (flow work is baked into h), so their energy balances run through Cp. Closed, non-flow systems — gas heated in a rigid tank — change internal energy, so Cv. A rigid-tank problem that mentions pressure rising still wants Cv; a compressor problem is a flow problem no matter what the pressure does.

The relations worth having cold: Cp = Cv + R for an ideal gas (so Cp > Cv, always), and k = Cp/Cv — the ratio that runs isentropic-process relations. For liquids and solids there's effectively one specific heat, and the distinction dissolves.

The distractor logic: when a specific-heat problem offers two plausible answers, one of them is usually the other specific heat.
