Engineering economics on the PE Mechanical exam

Engineering economics appears in the supportive-knowledge area of all three PE Mechanical depths — and it's some of the most gettable points on the exam, because it's procedural and the factors are in the Handbook. Don't leave these on the table.

What you actually need to own

• Time value of money — the core idea that a dollar now ≠ a dollar later:
  • Single payment: F = P·(1 + i)^n, and P = F / (1 + i)^n.
• The standard interest factors (you look these up; know which to use):
  • (F/P, i, n) future from present, (P/F, i, n) present from future;
  • (A/P, i, n) capital recovery — annual from present; (P/A, i, n) present from a uniform series;
  • (F/A, i, n) and (A/F, i, n) for future ↔ uniform series; gradient factors for changing cash flows.
• Comparing alternatives on an equal basis:
  • Present worth (PW), annual worth (AW)/EUAC, and future worth — pick one and apply it consistently to every option.
  • Rate of return (ROR/IRR) and benefit-cost (B/C) ratios for accept/reject and ranking.
• Watch the details: nominal vs effective interest rates, consistent compounding periods, and depreciation (straight-line, MACRS) when after-tax or book-value problems appear.

Where people lose points

• Picking the wrong factor — A/P vs P/A, or F/P vs P/F — the most common (and avoidable) slip.
• Inconsistent comparison basis — comparing one option on PW and another on AW.
• Period/rate mismatches — monthly cash flows with an annual rate, or nominal used as effective.
• Unequal service lives — failing to put alternatives on a common horizon (or use AW) before comparing.

How to study it

This is rote, high-yield territory: drill the factor selection until A/P, P/A, F/P, and P/F are instant, and practice putting alternatives on one consistent basis (PW or AW) before comparing. Because the factors live in the Handbook, the skill is choosing the right one fast — so rehearse finding them in the Handbook.
