The unit traps that cost PE Mechanical points
A candidate who missed two problems in the final exam hour put it simply afterward: he knew the material — he forgot to convert Celsius to Fahrenheit, twice, because by hour seven "mental fatigue is real." That's the defining feature of unit mistakes: they don't fail the problems you can't solve. They fail the ones you can. And because answer choices on a well-written exam are built from predictable errors, the wrong number you compute is usually right there among the options, looking confirmed.
The defense isn't "be careful" — care degrades over an eight-hour exam. It's knowing the specific traps and building mechanical habits that don't depend on freshness.
The US-customary classics. Mass and force both called "pounds" is the tax the USCS system charges: lbm and lbf are different quantities, and problems mixing weight, mass flow, and acceleration are where the distinction bites. If your equation crosses between them, the conversion constant has to appear — if you've never written it, stop and check the setup.
Absolute vs. gauge pressure. Pressure gauges read relative to atmosphere; gas laws, compression ratios, and property tables want absolute. The trap is one-directional and predictable: any relation that multiplies, divides, or ratios pressures needs absolute values. "psig" in the givens is a flag planted in the problem — notice it.
Absolute temperature. Same logic: anything thermodynamic that ratios or multiplies temperatures — gas laws, cycle efficiencies, radiation — needs Rankine or Kelvin. ΔT is the forgiving exception (a Fahrenheit difference equals a Rankine difference), and knowing when it's forgiving is exactly what keeps you fast.
Per-pound of what? Psychrometrics quantities are commonly per pound of dry air, not of the moist mixture; steam quantities per pound of steam; fuel quantities per pound of fuel. When a problem mixes streams, the basis is the trap.
Rate vs. amount, unit-system drift, and the last step. Btu vs Btu/h, horsepower vs kilowatts vs tons — and problem statements that hand you a mixed bag of SI and USCS givens precisely to see if you'll normalize before computing. Then the oldest trap of all: solving everything correctly and reporting the wrong final unit because the question asked in tons and you finished in Btu/h.
Three habits that survive hour seven: carry units through every line of the calculation (a units column costs seconds and catches most of the above silently); sanity-check magnitude against the physical situation before answering; and treat a "clean" match to an answer choice with suspicion on any problem where a conversion was involved — matching a distractor feels identical to being right.
