1. An accredited engineering degree
The standard foundation is a bachelor's degree from an EAC/ABET-accredited engineering program. It's the cleanest path and what most state boards expect.
If your degree isn't ABET-accredited — or is in a related science — most boards still have a pathway, but they typically require substantially more experience (often eight years instead of four) and may ask for additional documentation. 2. Pass the FE exam
The Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) exam is the first license-track exam, usually taken near graduation while the fundamentals are fresh. Pass it and you become an EIT/EI (Engineer Intern/Engineer-in-Training) — the credential that puts you on the path to the PE.

- Pay state application and license fees (these vary widely).

Getting licensed in more than one state
Once you hold a PE license, working in additional states usually goes through comity (sometimes loosely called "reciprocity").
