The custom-retest method: how PE passers actually study
Read enough "how I passed" write-ups and a pattern emerges. Behind the different courses, books, and schedules, the candidates who pass — especially the ones years out of school — describe the same core loop, independently invented over and over: keep a running list of every problem you miss, turn that list into your own custom retest, and re-solve it until nothing on it can surprise you. One passer described ending prep with a personal 26-problem "mini-exam" built from his misses, printed, timed at exam pace, and repeated until every item was automatic.
It works for a specific reason, and it has one failure mode worth knowing about.
Why the loop works
Your misses are a map of your gaps. Generic review spreads effort evenly over material you mostly know. The miss-list concentrates effort exactly where your score isn't — the highest- yield study minutes available to you.
Re-solving is retrieval practice. Reading a solution feels like learning but stores little. Reconstructing the method yourself — struggling first, checking after — is what makes it stick. The passers' version is strict: attempt the redo cold, handbook only, before looking at anything.
The list shrinks, and that's the point. Each cycle, problems you've genuinely absorbed drop off; what remains is a smaller, harder core. A shrinking retest is visible progress — and near exam day, a short list of stubborn problem types is exactly the final-review syllabus you want.
The loop, step by step
- Log every miss — and every lucky guess and every "right answer, wrong method." Note the problem, the area, and why you missed it (concept? setup? units? handbook lookup? misread?).
- Batch them into a retest once you have 15–30. Fresh sitting, timed at exam pace (~6 minutes a problem), handbook only.
- Sort the results. Solved cold → off the list. Solved shakily or missed again → stays, with a note on what broke this time. The why column matters more than the score: a units miss and a concept miss need different fixes.
- Repeat on a spacing. A few days between cycles beats same-day repeats — you're testing what stuck, not what's still warm.
- Measure with fresh problems. This is the failure mode: after enough cycles you'll ace your retest — but that proves mastery of those problems, not readiness. The retest is for drilling; only problems you've never seen can measure you. Alternate: drill the list, then take a fresh timed set and let it refill the list.
