How hard is the PE Power exam, really?
Hard enough that four in ten don't pass at the first attempt. Not so hard that preparation doesn't work — six in ten do, and most describe a structured few months rather than heroics.
The more useful question is what kind of hard, because it isn't what most candidates expect.
What actually makes it difficult
Breadth, more than depth. Nine areas from instrumentation to protection to codes, across 39 subtopics. Very few candidates work across all of it — the typical Power candidate is strong in the part of the syllabus their job covers and cold on the rest. The preparation problem is usually the areas you never touch professionally, not the difficulty of any single topic.
More conceptual questions than people prepare for. This is the most consistently reported surprise. Candidates describe an exam that asks them to reason about how a system behaves rather than to compute a value — and describe practice material that skewed heavily toward calculation, because calculation problems are easier to write. The gap between the two is where a lot of the four-in-ten happens. In candidates' own words: you either knew it or you guessed.
Code navigation under real constraints. Codes and standards are a structural part of this exam, and the difficulty is rarely whether you understand the requirement — it's finding it. The exam supplies standards as individual chapters with only one openable and searchable at a time, which breaks the search habit most people build while studying with a full PDF open. Being years from the material. A large share of candidates are a decade or more out of school, often working adjacent to power rather than in it. That's normal here, and it's a real workload — but it's also the group that passes routinely, so treat it as a reason to plan properly rather than a reason to doubt.
What is not hard about it
Running out of time. This is worth stating plainly because it contradicts what many candidates assume from other PE exams. Across a large body of PE Power write-ups, candidates routinely finish with an hour or more to spare, and essentially nobody reports leaving questions blank because the clock beat them. Unused time from the first half rolls into the second.
If you're building your preparation around going faster, you're probably solving a problem you don't have — with one real exception: code lookups, where slow searching genuinely does cost points.
Endurance, on the other hand, is real. Nine hours degrades everyone. One candidate reviewing his own practice answers found a clean break-point — 85% correct before it, 65% after. That's worth training with full-length sittings even though the clock itself isn't the threat.
So how should you read the difficulty?
It's a breadth-and-judgement exam wearing the costume of a calculation exam. The engineers who find it hardest are usually the ones who prepared as though fluency with formulas would carry them, and met an exam that wanted to know whether they understood what the formulas describe.
Prepare for the concepts, cover the areas your job doesn't, learn to find things fast in the references, and the difficulty becomes ordinary. How long that takes.
