How to self-study for the FE or PE exam: the complete plan

Plenty of engineers take a review course; plenty pass without one. If you've chosen the self-study route — by budget, by temperament, or because your schedule won't fit a live class — this is the complete plan: what to use, what each piece is for, and where a few dollars genuinely move the needle. What your plan has to provide
Whatever route a candidate takes, passing prep supplies the same three things: structure (a plan that tells you what to do each week), reps (a large supply of exam-style problems), and realism (practice and mocks calibrated to the actual exam, worked from the actual Handbook). Courses package these; self-study means assembling them yourself. That's the whole job — everything below maps to one of the three.
The self-study stack (what's actually worth it)
- The NCEES Reference Handbook (free). The only reference you get on the closed-book exam — download it and study with it, so finding equations and tables is automatic on exam day. (It's a reference, not a teacher — it won't explain anything.) How to navigate the Mechanical Handbook.
- The official NCEES Practice Exam (cheap, worth it). The single best gauge of the real exam's style and difficulty. If you can do this comfortably, you're close.
- Your old textbooks + course notes (free). For relearning concepts — especially for the FE, where the material is fresher.
- A realistic problem source. This is where you spend most of your time. Cheap practice-problem books exist; the bar is whether the problems actually mirror the current exam (many don't). Reps on exam-real problems is the highest-leverage thing you can do.
- An NCEES-approved calculator. Buy it early and drill its keystrokes so it saves time on exam day instead of costing it.

You do not need 70 hours of video lectures. The data from people who pass is consistent: working problems beats watching lectures.

The plan (problem-first)
- Diagnose before you schedule. Find your weak areas first, so your weeks go where the points are — not back to chapter one. (Retakers: your NCEES score report is a ready-made diagnostic — start there.)
- Make problems the main event. Drill realistic, exam-difficulty problems in your weak areas; go back to theory only when a problem exposes a gap.
- Practice with the Handbook open. Build the navigation skill — know roughly where the equations, charts, and tables live, so you're not hunting under time pressure.
- Fix your pace. Do practice timed. At ~6 minutes per question, pacing is a top failure mode — train the triage (bank fast points, flag time-sinks). Pacing strategy.
- Take full-length mocks near the end. Under exam conditions, to confirm your pace holds and surface any last gaps.
