Fits, tolerances, and GD&T

This is the practical, drawings-and-manufacturing side of Machine Design & Materials — and it's worth real points because it's the kind of thing working engineers either know cold or guess at.

Fits

  • Clearance fit — the hole is always larger than the shaft; parts slide together.
  • Interference (press) fit — the shaft is larger than the hole; you need force (or heat/cold) to assemble, and the joint carries load by friction.
  • Transition fit — somewhere in between, depending on where the actual sizes land.
  • Allowance is the tightest possible interference or loosest clearance; the tolerance is the spread on each part.

Tolerance stack-up

When several toleranced dimensions add up along a chain, the worst-case result is the sum of the extremes. Knowing how to add tolerances along a stack — and when worst-case vs. statistical treatment applies — is a common question type.

Interference-fit stresses

A press fit creates a contact pressure at the interface, which sets up hoop stresses in both parts. This connects directly to the "thermal and interference stresses" subtopic — and to the assembly question of how much temperature change you need to slip the parts together.

GD&T basics

Geometric dimensioning and tolerancing controls form, orientation, and position beyond simple size limits. You don't need to be a GD&T specialist, but recognize the common controls and what a feature-control frame is telling you.

Where people lose points

  • Misidentifying the fit type from the given dimensions.
  • Stack-up errors — adding tolerances in the wrong direction or double-counting.
  • Interference pressure / assembly-temperature setups.

How to study it

Practice classifying fits from numbers fast, run a few tolerance stack-ups, and work an interference-fit pressure problem end to end. It's high-yield because it's bounded — a small set of question types that reward a little focused practice.
