How CastorPrep compares to the other PE Mechanical practice tools
You pass the PE Mechanical by working problems — so the practice you choose matters more than almost anything else in your prep. This is an honest look at the main options, including where CastorPrep isn't the right fit.
One thing up front: a problem bank is not a course. If you want lectures and a curriculum, that's a course's job (School of PE, PPI Live, and others do it well) — and you can run any practice tool alongside one. This page compares the practice/problem-bank options, CastorPrep included.
What actually separates practice tools
It's tempting to compare on raw problem count. But a bigger pile doesn't help if you get stuck and nothing explains why, or if the problems don't feel like the real exam. The things that move a score:
- Does it explain when you're stuck? A worked solution is table stakes; a tutor that walks your mistake on that problem is rarer.
- Is it exam-calibrated? Real difficulty and pacing, the current spec, and the actual NCEES item types — not just multiple-choice from an older edition.
- Does it cover your depth? PE Mechanical is three separate exams (HVAC & Refrigeration, Machine Design & Materials, Thermal & Fluid Systems). You sit one — it has to be covered well.
- Does it help you aim? A diagnostic and full-length, timed mocks tell you where you stand before exam day.
- Price and format — one-time PDF, subscription, or bundled in a course.
The options, honestly
NCEES official practice exam. The ruler everyone else is measured against — written by the people who write the real exam. Buy it no matter what else you use; it's the truest read on format and difficulty. It's one form per depth (~$59.95, one-time — verify current price), solutions only, no help when you're stuck and no study plan. It's the benchmark, not the gym.
PPI QBank (PPI2Pass / Kaplan). The incumbent, and the closest structural match to a subscription problem bank — a large library (560+ problems), kept on the current Oct-2025 spec, with custom quizzes and the brand most candidates know. PPI also offers an AI tutor ("PPI-Trained AI Tutor"), bundled in their course/eLearning tiers as a study-tips and explanation helper; its underlying model and how it's grounded aren't publicly described. If raw volume and a known brand are what you're after, PPI is the benchmark to beat. (QBank pricing changes — check their current rate.)
School of PE Question Bank. A question bank and full-length exam simulator attached to a lecture-course provider, with a diagnostic and subject quizzes. It's solid and covers all three depths; there's no AI tutor (feedback is structured/human). Standalone QBank pricing is worth confirming directly with them.
Engineering Pro Guides. The value floor, and genuinely good at it — per-depth practice exams with detailed solutions (around $42 each, ~$150 for the bundle — verify the current edition and that it's on the Oct-2025 spec). A nice realism touch is its references/lookup exams, which mirror the closed-book skill. It's static PDFs, though: solutions only, no tutor, no diagnostic, self-directed.
CastorPrep. Built around the parts the others leave out. Every problem carries a tutor grounded in that problem's own verified worked solution — so when you're stuck you can ask why your answer is wrong and get the step to fix. Problems cite the NCEES Reference Handbook section you'd use on the real closed-book exam, and where no verified reference exists the field is left blank rather than filled with a plausible-looking one. The bank is hundreds of original problems, built to the difficulty of the official NCEES sample exams, with all five NCEES item types (multiple choice, multi-select, fill-in-with-tolerance, point-click, drag-drop) and chart/figure exhibits, on the current Oct-2025 spec. A diagnostic points you at weak areas, and full-length timed mocks rehearse the eight-hour day. The practice bank, the worked solutions and the diagnostic are free with an account; Pro is $29/month, cancel anytime, and adds the full-length timed mocks and the tutor on every problem.
Where CastorPrep isn't the answer: it's not a course. There are no video lectures and no live instructor — the bet is that a grounded tutor on every problem does more for your score than another lecture. If you learn best from structured teaching, pair CastorPrep with a course rather than replacing one.
