A study schedule is only as good as what it tells you to do each week. Most "plans" are just a topic list with dates stapled on. The four phases (every plan uses these)
- Diagnose & shore up foundations — find your weak areas before you build a routine, then refresh the fundamentals those gaps expose. Don't skip this: studying everything evenly is the #1 way capable engineers run out of time.
- Drill your weak, heavy areas — the core of the plan. Work exam-real problems, weighted to the spec and your diagnosed gaps, with the Handbook open every time. Go back to theory only when a problem exposes a hole.
- Cover breadth & patch gaps — sweep the remaining areas so nothing thin gets found on exam day.
- Full-length mocks & pacing — timed, closed-book, full 80-question simulations. Fix pacing while it still matters, and confirm your weak areas are actually fixed.

Adjusting the plan by depth
- Machine Design & Materials (broadest, lowest pass): give Phase 3 (breadth) extra weeks — six areas is a lot to keep thin spots out of. Drill the mechanics-of-materials spine early since it compounds.
- HVAC & Refrigeration: front-load psychrometrics (≈a quarter of the exam) in Phase 2 and keep it warm all the way to exam day.
- Thermal & Fluid Systems: weight Phase 2 toward power cycles and compressible flow — the traps that catch otherwise-comfortable candidates.

How to make the hours count
- Problems first, theory second. You pass by working problems; reach for theory only when a problem exposes a gap. (The problem-first method.)
- Always closed-book-realistic — Handbook open, approved calculator, no notes. Practicing any other way builds the wrong reflex.
- Re-test weekly. Confirm a weak area is actually fixed before you move on — otherwise the gap resurfaces on exam day.
