PPI QBank for the PE Mechanical exam — an honest review

PPI (now part of Kaplan) is the ~50-year incumbent of PE prep, and its QBank — a searchable database of PE Mechanical practice problems inside the PPI Learning Hub — is one of the most established ways to get problem reps. If you're deciding where to buy your practice, here's a straight read: what it is, what it costs, where it genuinely shines, and where a question bank leaves the work to you.

What you get

• A large problem database — 560+ PE Mechanical practice problems. This is the headline: among the biggest problem counts you can buy.
• Custom quizzes. Build your own sets — filter by topic and by quantitative vs. non-quantitative — so you can target areas.
• Worked solutions in PPI's long-trusted style (their reference manuals are an industry quality bar).
• Current spec. PPI's practice content is kept on the current (October 2025) NCEES specification — so "their content is outdated" is not a fair knock here.
• Subscription model. The QBank is a monthly subscription that auto-renews (cancel anytime). (PPI doesn't publish a single fixed QBank price consistently — check the current rate on their site; PPI's broader self-study content library starts around $149, and full courses run much higher.)

Where it's genuinely strong

• Problem volume. On raw count, 560+ is hard to beat — if your priority is a lot of problems, this delivers.
• Brand and trust. Five decades of PE prep and widely used reference manuals; you're not betting on an unknown.
• Filtering and custom sets. The topic / quantitative filters let you build focused drills.
• It's on the current spec — a real point in its favor.

Where a question bank leaves you on your own

These aren't knocks on PPI specifically — they're the limits of the question-bank format, and they're worth knowing before you buy:

• It's attempt-and-check, not explain-your-mistake. You get a worked solution, but nothing explains why you got this problem wrong, or answers a follow-up at 11pm. (PPI does offer a "PPI-Trained AI Tutor," but per its public description it's a study-tips / explanations / resource recommender bundled in their eLearning course packages — not, as far as PPI discloses, a grounded per-problem solver, and not a feature of the bare QBank.)
• No diagnostic. It hands you problems and filters; it doesn't tell you which weak areas are costing you the most or what to drill first. Direction is the hardest part of self-study, and you supply it.
• The QBank is its own subscription, separate from PPI's books (Six-Minute Problems, the Lindeburg practice exams, ~$60–$90 one-time) and separate again from their courses.

Who it's right for

• You want maximum problem volume and a recognized brand, and
• You're comfortable directing your own study (no diagnostic) and learning from solutions alone (no tutor explaining your specific miss).

If that's you, PPI's QBank is a solid, deep, current problem source.

How it fits with the rest of your prep

Whatever you choose, work the NCEES official practice exam as your realism benchmark — it's from the exam authority. Then the question is what you drill on day to day. PPI gives you the biggest pile of problems; what it doesn't give you is help on your specific mistakes or a plan for what to drill next. That's the gap a grounded, diagnosed practice tool fills — honestly, PPI has more raw problems than we do today; our edge is the smart part (a tutor on every problem + a diagnostic + current-spec mocks), not a bigger pile. The verdict

Worth it if volume and brand are your priorities and you'll self-direct. It's a deep, current, trustworthy problem bank. Just go in knowing it's solutions-only and undiagnosed — you bring the structure and the explanations.
