Can ChatGPT pass the PE exam?

Nobody can tell you, and you should be suspicious of anyone who says otherwise.
That's not a dodge. It's the actual state of the evidence, and the reason is structural: NCEES doesn't release its exams. There is no public PE exam to run a model against. Every number you'll see quoted on this question — an accuracy percentage, a "it scored X%," a confident yes or no — traces back to somebody running a model on practice problems, or on problems they wrote themselves, and then generalising.
We could publish a number too. We've chosen not to, for a reason worth stating up front: any figure we published would be out of date within months, because model capability is the fastest-moving variable in this entire subject. A page that answers this question with a percentage is a page that quietly becomes wrong and keeps ranking.
So here's what we can offer instead — the question underneath this one, which doesn't move.
The question that actually decides something
Not "can it get the right answer?" but "would you be able to tell if it didn't?"
Sit with why that's the better question.
Imagine the most optimistic answer to the original: it can reliably solve PE-level problems. Now imagine you're using it to study a topic you haven't mastered. It produces a worked solution. You cannot distinguish a correct one from a confident wrong one, because the only tool you'd use to check is the understanding you're trying to build.
Now imagine the pessimistic answer. Same situation, same inability to check.
Your study behaviour is identical in both worlds. Which means the capability question — the one everybody argues about — doesn't actually change what you should do. The verification question changes everything.
And it gets more important as models improve, not less
This is the part people get backwards.
A tool that's wrong often teaches you to verify. You get burned early, you develop the habit, the habit protects you.
A tool that's wrong rarely teaches you to stop checking. And then the rare error arrives with no alarm attached, lands in your notes, and gets rehearsed as if it were correct. You practise a wrong method until it's automatic, and you find out in the exam room.
The danger isn't the error rate. It's the ratio between how confident the output looks and how much signal you have about whether it's right — and that ratio has been getting worse for the studier, not better, because presentation quality has improved faster than any ability you have to audit it.
The version of this question that has a real answer
You can't use it in the exam. That part isn't ambiguous: the PE is closed-book and proctored, with an approved on-screen reference and an approved calculator. Nothing you brought is in the room with you.
So even in the most generous reading of "yes, it could pass," the sentence that matters is: it wouldn't be taking your exam. You would. The only thing that transfers is what ended up in your head, and the whole question of whether AI helps or hurts collapses into a single, much more useful one:
Does the way you're using it build understanding you'll still have under time pressure, alone?
That has a real answer, it's one you can assess honestly about your own study, and it doesn't depend on anyone's benchmark.
What that means in practice
The split is simple and it's the whole method:
Use it where you hold the ground truth.
- Explaining a worked solution you already have — the answer is established, so you're asking for narration, not truth.
- Coaching you through a problem you got wrong, with the official solution in the conversation and an explicit instruction not to hand you the answer.
- Re-explaining a concept you can check against your own materials.
- Working out why each wrong option is wrong on a problem whose key you already have.
Get it elsewhere where you don't.
- Answers to problems you can't yet solve.
- Answer keys for problems it wrote itself — the problem and its key come from the same place, so there's nothing independent to check against.
- Any judgement about whether you're ready. That's a measurement against the real exam's blueprint, difficulty and clock, and it needs problems the tool didn't write plus a record of how you've done on them over time.

What people who passed actually say
Worth separating carefully from the capability question, because it's a claim about people, not about any tool.
Read enough pass write-ups and a consistent picture emerges: assistants show up constantly, and almost always as one item in a stack — a review course, a question bank, the official NCEES practice exam, and AI used for explanation on top. Very few describe it as their primary engine, and the ones who go into detail describe the explain-don't-produce split independently, in their own words, without anyone having taught it to them.
That's not evidence about what a model can do. People who pass are not a controlled experiment, and the ones who write up their method aren't a random sample. It is reasonable evidence about what experienced candidates converge on when they've got something real at stake — and they converge on using it where the answer is already known.
The honest bottom line
The capability question is genuinely interesting and genuinely unanswerable from public information. It's also the wrong thing to base a study plan on, because the two possible answers imply the same behaviour: use it where you can check it, and get your ground truth from something built to be checked.
That's true today, it was true two years ago, and it will be true for whatever ships next — which is more than can be said for any number either of us could put on this page.
