How to study for the PE Mechanical exam

1. Start with a diagnostic, not chapter one
Before you build a schedule, find out where you actually stand. A diagnostic that mirrors the real exam tells you which areas are costing you points, so you spend your weeks on those instead of re-studying what you already know.
- Make it spec-based. You want your weak areas mapped to the exam's actual topic areas, so the plan that comes out is exam-shaped.
- Retakers: you already have one. Your NCEES score report shows your relative performance by area — the most honest diagnostic there is. Build straight from it.
2. Make problems the main event
Most of your study time should be doing problems, not reading about doing them.
- Work weak areas first, at exam difficulty — not the easy warm-ups that feel productive but don't move you.
- When you miss one, then go to theory — targeted, the specific concept, not a full chapter re-read.
- Re-work every miss until the method is automatic, not just recognizable. Recognizing a solution isn't the same as being able to produce it cold under the clock.
- Space your repetition — come back to a previously-weak area a week later to confirm it's actually fixed, not just fresh.

3. Rehearse the closed-book Handbook

Don't study every topic evenly. 5. Fix your pace before exam day

- Review every miss; patch the specific theory; re-work it.
- Re-test at the end of the week to confirm it's fixed — then move down the list.

- Reading the reference manual cover to cover instead of using it to look things up.
- Studying everything evenly instead of attacking diagnosed weak areas.
- Practicing untimed and open-everything, then meeting the clock for the first time on exam day.
- Confusing "I recognize this" with "I can solve this cold." Re-work misses until you can.
