Supportive Knowledge (HVAC and Refrigeration)

The cross-cutting basics that round out the exam: codes and standards, acoustics and vibration control, economic analysis, and electrical concepts. It's the lightest area on the HVAC & Refrigeration depth — worth a handful of points, and worth exactly a handful of prep. The goal is not to leave easy questions on the table, not to turn this into a study marathon.

What the problems look like

Breadth-oriented — standards recall plus short single-step calculations (economics, three-phase power, acoustics); rarely multi-step. Recurring shapes — which standard governs what; basic acoustics (sound power vs. pressure, NC ratings, dB addition); economic analysis (present worth, life-cycle cost, payback); and electrical basics (single/three-phase power, power factor, motor sizing).

By exam day you should be able to —

• know which code/standard governs which thing (energy, ventilation, refrigeration safety);
• handle basic acoustics — distinguish sound power from pressure, read an NC rating, reason about simple attenuation;
• run economic analysis — present worth, life-cycle cost, and simple vs. discounted payback;
• do electrical basics — single/three-phase power, power factor, and motor kW / full-load amps.

Where people lose points

• Mixing up which standard covers what (energy vs. ventilation vs. refrigeration safety).
• Confusing sound power with sound pressure.
• Economics: ignoring the time value of money (simple vs. discounted payback) or using the wrong factor (P/F vs. P/A).
• Forgetting the √3 in three-phase power.
