Thermal power generation: the power cycles and the components that run them — turbines, boilers and steam generators, condensers, and the cycles themselves. One of the heavier areas on the Thermal & Fluid Systems depth.
What the problems look like
Cycle and component analysis — Rankine / Brayton / combined cycles (thermal efficiency, net work, heat rates, reheat/regeneration); turbine work and isentropic efficiency; boiler/steam-generator duty and waste-heat recovery; condenser heat rejection. Steam-property work (tables / Mollier) throughout. Calculation-heavy.
By exam day you should be able to —
- analyze power cycles — Rankine, Brayton, combined: thermal efficiency, net work, heat rate, reheat/regeneration;
- compute turbine work and apply isentropic efficiency; expand steam using tables / the Mollier chart;
- find boiler/steam-generator duty and waste-heat recovery;
- compute condenser heat rejection.
Where people lose points
- Isentropic-efficiency direction — actual turbine work is less than ideal; actual pump/compressor work is more.
- Heat rate ↔ efficiency — heat rate (Btu/kWh) = 3,412/η; they move inversely, and the direction gets flipped.
- Wrong property state — saturated vs. superheated; mishandling quality (x).
- Confusing cycle efficiency with a single component efficiency.
- Forgetting pump work in Rankine (small but tested) / the back-work ratio in Brayton.
